How to Clean Double Hung Windows (Demo)

Cleaning double hung windows can be tricky, as you need to lift up the lower sash in order to reach the window panes. Then, you’ll want to engage the tilt latches and slide the upper sash back up. Be careful not to damage the seal of your window by using harsh cleaning materials.

Tip: Clean the interior side first

Double hung windows are designed with two sashes that slide up and down. They allow better air circulation, especially in older homes with higher ceilings. Newer models feature latches on the interior side that allow you to clean the interior side of the window without having to climb a ladder. However, you should avoid shaking the sashes as shaking can ruin the painted finish.

First, remove the interior grilles. If the interior window has removable interior screens, you can clean them with a small brush and water. Make sure to wipe them dry before reinstalling them. If you need to clean the exterior side of a window, use a microfiber cloth to minimize streaks. The cloth is also reusable and washable. Avoid using a squeegee as it can leave streaks and may be difficult to use with exterior grids.

Clean the exterior side later

After the cold winter, warm weather is welcome, but the warm temperatures can also bring dirt and grime. Cleaning windows that are dirty can be time-consuming and difficult. A double hung window has two separate sashes: the top sash and the bottom sash.

To clean the exterior side of a double hung window, first lift the lower sash by tilting it inward. Next, engage the tilt latches and slide the upper sash back up. To clean the interior side of a double hung window, use a mild, nonabrasive cleaner. You should be careful not to use harsh cleaners, as they can damage the seal around the window panes.

You can use two-to-three tablespoons of vinegar mixed with water to clean the exterior side of your double-hung windows. This solution will also work on glass windows.

Tilt sashes are common on double hung windows

If you’re considering installing new windows in your home, you may want to look into double hung windows. These windows are often made with tilt sashes. This type of window allows you to control the amount of air that flows in and out of your home. They feature two sashes: the top sash is fixed and the lower sash is operable. These windows are great for ventilation and are easy to clean.

Double hung windows have two sashes that tilt out and in. You can open and close these windows to let in natural light. A sash can be made of several materials, including wood, aluminum, fiberglass, composite, and vinyl. A sash may also have a sash tilt pin. This pin allows the sash to tilt in and out during cleaning.

Cleaning the interior side first

When cleaning double-hung windows, you should begin by cleaning the interior side. To do so, open the window to the center and lift the sash. You should do this on both sides if possible. Then, lift the second sash and push it in.

If you cannot reach the top or bottom sash, tilt the window to clean it from the inside. It is also helpful to remove any screens that may be attached to the windows. Once you’ve cleaned the interior side, tilt the upper sash into the vertical position. If the window is locked, you can switch the latches to a secure position.

After removing the window cover, clean the interior side with a cleaning solution. While you’re cleaning the interior side, be sure to dry it thoroughly. Then, repeat steps 4-8 to clean the exterior glass.

Cleaning the exterior side last

When cleaning a double hung window, start by cleaning the exterior side first. To do this, open the window two inches and use your hand to push the lower sash towards one side. You can then clean the interior side of the window. After you’re done cleaning the interior side, you can return the sash to the window frame.

The exterior side of double hung windows is easier to clean from the inside than the interior. To reach the interior glass of a double hung window, raise the bottom sash by using a ladder or sturdy object. Then, use the wash assist tabs to reach the upper sash.
